Billy Stairmand is New Zealand’s first Olympic surfer and one of the country’s most successful professional surfers.

Competing internationally for more than 20 years, Billy has represented New Zealand around the world and won the national surfing title a record eight times. He first captured global attention in 2011 when he defeated legendary 10-time world champion Kelly Slater in an international competition in Australia — a moment that firmly established him on the world stage.

Behind the results and podium finishes, Billy’s journey has also been shaped by personal adversity, including the loss of his mother to cancer and the sudden death of his brother in a car accident. These experiences have deeply influenced his outlook on life and competition.

Known for his positive energy and grounded perspective, Billy brings a refreshing authenticity to the stage. He shares the lessons learned from years of elite sport — discipline, resilience, mindset and perseverance — along with the importance of maintaining perspective through both success and hardship.

Billy’s story is one of dedication, sacrifice and optimism, offering audiences an inspiring reminder of what can be achieved through commitment, belief and the support of others.
